Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Tuscany Column Radiator made of?
The Tuscany range is made of solid cast iron. This is a very strong and heavy metal that has been used for heating for over 100 years. It is much thicker and durable than the thin steel used in modern panel radiators.
Why do people choose cast iron over steel?
Cast iron is famous for holding onto heat. Steel radiators get hot fast but cool down instantly when you turn them off. A cast iron radiator stays warm for a long time after the heating stops, keeping your room cozy for hours.
Will this radiator fit in my modern home?
Yes. While the Tuscany has a classic Victorian style, it looks stunning in modern rooms too. It adds a special character and texture that makes a plain room look more expensive and stylish.
How do I know which size to buy?
You must check the heat output you need. Every room needs a specific amount of heat based on its size and windows. You should use our online BTU Calculator to find the right number. If you guess, you might end up with a cold room.
What does the number of sections mean?
The sections are the individual vertical columns that make up the radiator. A radiator with 10 sections is narrower, while one with 20 sections is much wider and hotter. You can choose the number of sections to fit your wall space perfectly.
Do I need to buy valves separately?
Yes, valves are not included with the radiator. You need to buy a pair of valves to control the water flow. We recommend Traditional Thermostatic Valves because they match the vintage look and save you money on energy bills.
What are Wall Stays and do I need them?
Wall stays are small metal arms that attach the radiator to the wall. Because Tuscany radiators are very heavy and stand on feet, we highly recommend wall stays to stop them from tipping over if someone bumps into them.
Can I install this radiator myself?
We strongly suggest hiring a professional heating engineer. These radiators are extremely heavy and can weigh over 80kg. A professional will know how to lift them safely and connect the pipes without any leaks.
Does the radiator come painted?
The standard finish is usually a grey primer. This means it has a base coat and is ready for you to paint it any color you like. You can also order them in special colors if you prefer not to paint them yourself.
What kind of paint should I use?
You must use a heat resistant radiator paint or a high quality metal paint. Regular wall paint might peel or smell bad when the radiator gets hot. Spray paint often gives the smoothest finish on the tricky curves.
How does the radiator arrive at my house?
Due to the heavy weight, it will arrive on a pallet via a large truck. The driver will usually leave the pallet on the curb outside your home. You will need strong helpers to carry it inside as the driver cannot enter your house.
How do I clean dust from the columns?
Dust can get trapped between the columns. The best trick is to use a long radiator brush or a feather duster. If you keep the dust away, the heat can flow better into your room.
Why is my radiator cold at the top?
This usually means there is air trapped inside. You need to bleed the radiator. Use a radiator key to slightly open the small vent at the top until you hear a hiss. When water starts to drip out, close it immediately.
Is there a guarantee on these radiators?
Yes, the Tuscany range comes with a 10 Year Guarantee. This covers you against manufacturing defects, so you can have total peace of mind that your investment is safe.
Will it work with my existing heating system?
Yes, these radiators work with standard central heating systems just like any other radiator. You just need to make sure your pipework is ready to connect to the inlet and outlet at the bottom.
Does it take long to heat up?
Cast iron takes a little longer to get hot compared to steel. You might need to turn your heating on 15 minutes earlier than usual. However, the benefit is that it stays hot for much longer after you turn the boiler off.
Can I put this radiator in a bathroom?
Yes, they look beautiful in bathrooms. Just make sure you choose a size that provides enough heat to dry your towels and keep the room warm. You might want to add a towel bar accessory if available.
Are the feet adjustable?
The feet are usually part of the solid casting and cannot be adjusted. If your floor is uneven, your installer can use small shims or washers under the feet to make sure the radiator stands perfectly level.
What happens if I order the wrong size?
Since many of these are made to order or assembled specifically for you, returning them can be difficult and expensive due to shipping weights. It is very important to measure your space twice before you click buy.
Is cast iron energy efficient?
Yes, in its own way. Because it holds heat so well, your boiler does not have to work as hard to keep the room temperature steady. Using thermostatic valves with these radiators is a great way to maximize efficiency.
