Stoves Radiators - Carron Woodburning & Multifuel Stoves Radiators

Carron ECO Stove 5kW SE – Sage Green Enamel | DEFRA-Approved Wood Burning & Multifuel Stoves

Marry striking style with serious heating performance. The Carron ECO Stove 5kW SE in Sage Green Enamel is a beautifully crafted, DEFRA-approved wood burning and multifuel stove that delivers clean, efficient warmth to rooms up to 130 m³. Whether you live within a smoke control area or simply want the most environmentally responsible stove available today, this model ticks every box — and looks extraordinary doing it.

DEFRA-Approved & ECOdesign 2022 Compliant Stoves Built for Today's Standards

The Carron ECO 5kW SE is independently tested by KIWA — one of the UK's most respected certification bodies — and is fully approved under the ECOdesign 2022 directive. This means it meets the strictest emissions and efficiency benchmarks required for legal use across the UK, including designated smoke control areas. You don't need to compromise on ambience or heat output to comply with modern clean-air regulations.

  • DEFRA Approved – certified for use in smoke control zones throughout the UK
  • ECOdesign 2022 Compliant – ahead of the mandatory compliance curve
  • KIWA Tested – third-party verified performance and emissions data
  • 5-Year Manufacturer's Guarantee – backed with confidence

5kW Heat Output – The Perfect Wood Burning Stove for Living Rooms & Open Plan Spaces

With a nominal heat output of 5 kilowatts, this stove is ideally sized for medium living rooms, open-plan kitchens, dining areas, and garden rooms. It generates sufficient warmth without overpowering a space, making it a versatile choice for British homes where room sizes typically range from 20 to 35 square metres. Thanks to its highly efficient combustion system, more of every log is converted into usable heat rather than being lost up the flue.

Wood Burning & Multifuel Stoves in One – Flexible Fuel Options

The Carron ECO 5kW SE ships in wood burning configuration as standard, accepting seasoned hardwood logs up to 300mm in length. For homeowners who prefer the flexibility of burning both wood and solid mineral fuel (smokeless coal), an optional multifuel kit can be added at the point of purchase. The multifuel kit adds a drop-grate and ashpan, enabling clean and efficient burning of both fuel types within the same firebox.

  • Wood Burning Only – ideal for households committed to sustainable log burning
  • + Multifuel Kit (optional) – adds grate for smokeless mineral fuel compatibility
  • Max Log Size: 300mm

Sage Green Enamel Finish – Designer Stoves That Command Attention

The sage green enamel finish is fired directly onto the cast iron body, creating a hard-wearing, heat-resistant surface that won't chip, fade, or peel over years of use. This soft botanical tone brings a sense of calm and elegance to any interior — from Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces to contemporary barn conversions and Scandi-inspired new builds. It stands apart from standard black stoves, making it a genuine design statement as well as a functional heat source. Matching sage green enamel flue pipes are available as optional extras to complete the look from base to ceiling.

Why Choose the Carron ECO 5kW SE Over Other Wood Burning Stoves?

The UK stove market is crowded, yet the Carron ECO SE stands out on several fronts simultaneously. Most DEFRA-approved stoves are finished in standard matt black — the Carron ECO SE breaks this mould with a range of seven distinctive finishes. It combines regulatory compliance, independent UK testing, a competitive weight-to-output ratio, and the reassurance of a manufacturer's guarantee into one attractively priced package. For buyers prioritising:

  • Legal compliance in smoke control areas → DEFRA approved, ready to install without exemption paperwork
  • Long-term value → 5-year guarantee and cast iron construction built to outlast steel alternatives
  • Interior design integration → sage green enamel coordinates with natural, heritage and contemporary palettes
  • Low environmental impact → ECOdesign 2022 means lower particulate emissions than pre-2022 models
  • Flexible fuel use → optional multifuel kit eliminates the need to buy a second appliance

Installation Guide – Stoves Hearth Requirements & Flue Sizing

The Carron ECO 5kW SE is a floor-mounted stove and can be installed on a non-combustible hearth with a minimum thickness of just 12mm. This makes it compatible with most standard pre-cast and natural stone hearths without modification. The flue outlet exits top-only via a 125mm (5-inch) spigot, so your installer will need to route a 125mm twin-wall or single-skin flue pipe into a suitable chimney or connect to an existing lined flue. All installations must be carried out by a HETAS-registered installer or notified to your local Building Control. Ensure the flue draw meets the minimum requirements stated in the installation and operating guide (available for download above).

Frequently Asked Questions (8)

Is the Carron ECO Stove 5kW SE genuinely DEFRA approved, and what does that mean for where I can use it?
Yes, the Carron ECO 5kW SE holds full DEFRA Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs approval, which is the UK government's certification confirming that the appliance can be burned continuously using approved fuels including dry seasoned wood within a designated Smoke Control Area without breaching the Clean Air Act 1993. If you live in a Smoke Control Area which covers most cities and many towns across England, Scotland, and Wales, you are legally required to either burn only authorised smokeless fuels on an unapproved stove, OR use a DEFRA exempt appliance like the Carron ECO 5kW SE with any approved fuel. This stove eliminates the legal ambiguity entirely: you can burn dry, well seasoned hardwood logs year round without applying for an exemption or risking a penalty from your local council. Always confirm your area's smoke control status via the gov.uk postcode checker before purchasing any wood burning appliance.
What does ECOdesign 2022 compliance mean, and why does it matter when buying a new stove?
ECOdesign 2022 is a European and UK regulatory framework that sets strict limits on particulate matter PM emissions and minimum thermal efficiency levels for solid fuel appliances. Stoves sold after January 2022 must meet these standards to be legally placed on the UK market. The Carron ECO 5kW SE has been independently tested to ECOdesign 2022 standards by KIWA one of the UK's most credible testing authorities confirming that its particulate emissions are substantially lower than older Ecodesign Ready or pre 2022 models. In practical terms, this means you are burning more efficiently more heat per kilogram of wood, releasing fewer harmful fine particles into the atmosphere, and futureproofing your investment against tightening local air quality regulations. Buying a non ECOdesign 2022 compliant stove today would be a false economy, as such appliances may be prohibited or penalised in future years.
What is the difference between the wood burning and multifuel configurations, and is the multifuel kit worth purchasing?
In wood burning mode, the Carron ECO 5kW SE operates without a raised grate; logs sit directly on a flat bed, which improves combustion efficiency for wood because it allows logs to burn on a bed of ash an insulating layer that helps maintain firebox temperature. When the optional multifuel kit is fitted, a raised cast iron drop grate and ashpan are installed. Smokeless solid mineral fuels such as anthracite, Homefire, or Eco coal require air flow from beneath the fire to combust properly, which the raised grate provides. Note: standard house coal is not approved for use in smoke control areas and should not be burned in either configuration. The multifuel kit is worth the investment if your household intends to burn smokeless mineral fuel during high demand periods e.g., very cold snaps or if wood supply becomes inconsistent. It does not compromise wood burning performance when you switch back simply remove the ash residue before reloading with logs.
How durable is the sage green enamel finish, and will it fade or chip with regular use?
The sage green enamel finish on the Carron ECO 5kW SE is a vitreous enamel a powdered glass compound fused onto the cast iron body at very high temperatures during manufacture. This process creates a surface that is chemically bonded to the metal, making it inherently heat resistant, scratch resistant, and far more durable than standard painted or powder coated finishes. Under normal operating conditions, the colour will not fade, discolour or peel. However, enamel finishes are susceptible to thermal shock if cold water is poured onto the hot stove body, and to impact damage e.g., a hard knock from a log which can create micro cracks or chips.
What flue size and configuration does this stove require, and can I connect it to an existing chimney?
The Carron ECO 5kW SE uses a 125mm 5 inch diameter flue outlet, exiting from the top of the stove only there is no rear exit option on this model. If you are connecting to an existing brick or stone chimney, the chimney must be lined with a 125mm flexible or rigid liner to prevent condensation, improve draw, and ensure compliance with Building Regulations Part J. An existing clay tile or bare brick flue without a liner is not suitable for modern stoves and will likely fail a HETAS inspection. If installing without an existing chimney, a twin wall insulated flue system often called a Class 1 flue system must be constructed, which can pass through an external wall or up through the ceiling and roof.
What hearth type and minimum dimensions are required for the Carron ECO 5kW SE?
Building Regulations Approved Document J require a non combustible hearth of sufficient size and thickness beneath any solid fuel appliance. The Carron ECO 5kW SE can be installed on a hearth with a minimum thickness of just 12mm, which is notably shallow and means many existing hearth slabs will already meet this requirement without replacement. The hearth must be constructed from non combustible material suitable options include natural stone slate, limestone, granite, porcelain tile over a non combustible substrate, or pre cast concrete hearth pads. The constructional hearth beneath must extend at least 840mm in front of the stove's door opening and 150mm to each side. The free standing constructional hearth must be at least 125mm thick at its base typically structural concrete. Always consult a HETAS registered installer for an accurate site specific assessment before purchase, as chimney, room, and structural conditions vary significantly between properties.
Do I need to have this stove professionally installed, and does self installation void the guarantee?
Yes under UK Building Regulations Part J for England and Wales; equivalent regulations apply in Scotland and Northern Ireland, all solid fuel appliances with a chimney or flue must be installed by a competent person. In practice, this means either a HETAS registered installer, who can self certify the work to Building Control without requiring a separate application, or a non registered installer who notifies Building Control directly so an inspector can assess compliance. Failure to properly notify Building Control is a criminal offence, and an improperly installed stove can invalidate your home insurance and, more importantly, create serious fire and carbon monoxide risks. Whether self installation technically affects the Carron manufacturer's guarantee specifically is a matter to confirm with the retailer, but as a general principle, any damage or defect arising from non compliant installation would not be covered under warranty. Budget for a professional installation cost typically
What type of wood should I burn to maximise efficiency and protect the stove, and what is the recommended moisture content?
For the Carron ECO 5kW SE to operate at its rated efficiency and comply with its DEFRA and ECOdesign 2022 certification, only well seasoned or kiln dried hardwood logs should be burned. Under the UK government's Ready to Burn scheme effective since May 2021, all wood sold in volumes over 2 cubic metres must be certified at 20% moisture content or below. Burning wet or freshly cut green wood with moisture content above 25% dramatically reduces heat output wet wood wastes energy boiling off water, dramatically increases particulate emissions invalidating ECOdesign compliance in practice, and causes heavy tar and creosote deposits inside the flue, which are both a fire hazard and a chimney damage risk. Suitable hardwood species include oak, ash, beech, birch, and hornbeam. Softwoods such as pine produce more resin and should be avoided or used only as kindling.
