Frequently Asked Questions

How does the thermostatic sensor in the Balmoral head regulate room temperature?

The Balmoral head contains a liquid or wax expansion element. As the room air temperature rises, this internal element expands technically pushing a steel pin down against the valve seat to restrict hot water flow. Conversely, as the room cools, the element contracts, releasing the pin and allowing more hot water in. This "proportional control" maintains the room temperature within a variance of +/- 1

Does the Balmoral TRV range require 15mm pipework or can it fit microbore?

The Balmoral range comes with a standard 15mm compression fitting (nut and olive). To install these heavy brass valves on 10mm or 8mm microbore pipework, you must use a "reducing set" or pipe reducer. You insert the reducer into the valve inlet before tightening the nut. This creates a watertight seal on the smaller pipe while maintaining the visual bulk required for the traditional aesthetic.

Can the Balmoral valve head be replaced without draining the system?

Yes. The thermostatic head (the decorative top part) connects to the brass valve body via a threaded collar or grub screw. The water is held back by a gland seal and pin within the brass body. If the thermostatic head is damaged, you can technically unscrew and remove it while the heating system is full and pressurized. No water will escape as long as the brass body assembly remains undisturbed.

Is the Balmoral TRV compatible with T-pieces for Dual Fuel towel rails?

Yes, the Balmoral valves usually have a standard 1/2" BSP radiator tail. This makes them technically compatible with standard "Dual Fuel T-Pieces." You can screw the valve tail into the T-piece to allow an electric element to enter the radiator vertically. However, you must account for the extra width the T-piece adds to the "pipe centers" measurement when roughing in your pipework.

What does the 10 Year Guarantee cover regarding the valve mechanism?

The 10 Year Guarantee covers the mechanical integrity of the brass casting (against leaks/porosity) and the function of the internal spring/pin mechanism. It ensures the valve will not seize or leak under normal operating pressures (typically up to 10 bar). It generally excludes cosmetic wear to the finish caused by aggressive cleaning agents or failure caused by system debris (sludge) blocking the valve seat.
