Frequently Asked Questions (10)

What makes the Abbey Light Pewter finish different from standard Chrome or Silver?
The Light Pewter finish on these radiator valves is designed to provide a living look it has a deeper, more textured matte metallic appearance compared to the reflective shine of chrome. This makes it particularly effective at hiding fingerprints and water spots, and it perfectly matches the natural, raw aesthetic of cast iron or metallic painted radiators.
Are these valves compatible with 22mm pipework found in older UK homes?
Yes. While standard modern radiators use 15mm pipes, the Abbey range is uniquely versatile. By selecting the matching 22mm compression adaptors from the options menu, you can easily install these valves on larger diameter pipework without needing messy reducers or soldering, which is common in older central heating systems.
Why is a thermostatic valve TRV better than a manual lever valve for my bedroom?
A manual valve acts like a tap; it stays at the level you set until you turn it again. A TRV like the Abbey set contains a temperature sensitive internal component. If the sun warms your bedroom during the day, the TRV will sense the rise in air temperature and automatically close the valve to stop the radiator from getting hotter, saving you energy and maintaining a consistent comfort level.
Can I use these valves on a gravity-fed heating system?
Absolutely. Many traditional valves have restricted internal bores that hinder water flow in low pressure gravity systems. The Abbey TRV range is engineered with a high flow design, ensuring that even systems without a high pressure pump can circulate enough hot water through the radiator to meet its BTU output.
What is the purpose of the matching lockshield valve included in the set?
The lockshield valve is the non adjustable part of the pair. Once your system is installed, a plumber uses the lockshield to balance the radiator. This ensures that water is distributed evenly across all radiators in the house, preventing the ones closest to the boiler from getting all the heat while the furthest ones stay cold.
Do I need to buy a Decorators Cap for these valves?
A Decorators Cap is a useful accessory if you plan on removing the radiator for painting or decorating. It allows you to manually screw down and completely seal the valve so no water escapes while the radiator is off the wall. While not required for daily use, it is a low cost item that prevents accidental floods during home renovations.
Is the 10-year guarantee inclusive of the thermostatic sensor?
Yes, the 10-year manufacturer guarantee covers the mechanical integrity of the valve body as well as the functionality of the thermostatic head. This ensures that if the sensor fails to react to temperature changes or the valve develops a leak due to a manufacturing defect, you are fully covered for a decade.
Can these valves be installed horizontally or only vertically?
The Abbey TRVs are designed for flexible installation. While they are most commonly installed vertically head pointing up, they can be installed horizontally if space under the radiator is limited. However, for the most accurate temperature reading, ensure the thermostatic head is not trapped in a heat pocket behind furniture or heavy curtains.
How do I clean and maintain the Pewter finish?
Because this is a high quality decorative finish, you should avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, bleach, or abrasive scouring pads. To maintain the Pewter look, simply wipe the valves down with a soft, damp microfiber cloth and dry them immediately. This prevents limescale buildup and keeps the finish looking authentic.
What size of radiator tail is provided with the Abbey set?
The set comes with a standard 1/2 inch BSP radiator coupler, which fits 99% of modern radiators. If you have an exceptionally old cast iron radiator with 3/4 inch bushings, we offer matching 3/4 inch adaptors that allow the Abbey valves to screw directly into the larger radiator tapping without requiring extra bushings.
